Hands up if you enjoy your job? Thought so! I hate my job! Thinking back in my whole life I can honestly only think of two people I've met who actually enjoy their job (both had the personalities of children's TV presenters or were on drugs). When you ask someone if they enjoy their job usually they just shrug and say "its a job innit".
I wake up most mornings disappointed that my life isn't going how I planned. I graduated from university nearly two years ago and have been hunting for my dream job ever since. I must have send out about a hundred CVs and only ever recieved three replys (two saying no but they'll keep me on file and one that led to a weeks work placement in BBC Wales Newsroom in Wrexham that I loved). Naively I thought the day after my graduation cermony Steven Speilberg would call and offer me a job for life.
Nothing perpares you for the change from the joyful, care free days of being a student to the dark endless days of being rejected by companies that either don't have the time or inclination to reply to your letter and CV. I would like to be told why I'm not good enought to join their company and given advice on what I could do better in the future. I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall, repeating the sames mistakes over and over again and no one will help me stop it.
In the meantime I work in a job that bores me beyond belief. Don't get me wrong I like the people I work with and for every ten customers that talk to you like something they've trod on theres at least one you can have a giggle with. I would love more job satisfaction than "I filled the pens up pretty well today".
Theres this snobby side to me that has to drop into the conversation that I have a degree (even though I work at a bookies) when I bump into people I haven't seen in a while. I get infurated when friends/family/collegues say "don't let your degree go to waste" its not like I'm not trying!
In the current economical crisis I know I am very lucky to have a job and money (even if it doesn't stretch as much as I would like it to). Whereas I looking for my dream job sixty thousand people in Wales will just be looking for something to pay the bills. My heart goes out to the people who are worrying about losing their jobs or have already lost them.
I had a nightmare the other day that twenty years have gone by and I was still living at my mums, my boyfriend was still unemployed and I was still working in the same job, I nearly woke up in a cold sweat. A year from now I want a job that I'm passionate about. I want to get up in the morning and look forward to going to work. 1 in 10 britons will just want any job they can get.
